One of the most important things I’ve learned on my journey is that real growth doesn’t happen overnight. It happens through small, repeated efforts. For me, that meant learning how to build a routine and staying consistent with it, even when it felt like nothing was changing.


This was not something I mastered in a week or even a year. It took me over 20 years of showing up every day. It was hard work. Every single morning, I had to remind myself of the bigger picture. I had to focus on the long-term vision, even when the short-term results weren’t clear.

Whether you’re trying to build new habits or stay committed to a goal, your space and your circle play a huge role in your success.


I remember hearing a speech by Admiral William H. McRaven where he said,

“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.”

At first, it sounded almost too simple. But that message stuck with me. Making my bed was something I had done since I was a kid. I never thought twice about it. It was just part of my routine.


Years later, when I was working two jobs and putting myself through college, I came home one night completely drained. I was tired, stressed, and had nothing left in the tank. But when I walked into my room and saw that neatly made bed, I felt this wave of calm. That one small act reminded me that I still had control over something. It helped me understand the power of being organized, especially when everything else felt overwhelming.


That moment taught me how much a clean, stable environment can influence your mindset. When things are in order around you, it’s easier to stay focused and keep moving forward.


But it’s not just about physical space. The people you surround yourself with matter just as much, if not more. I learned that lesson the hard way. When I was younger, I spent time with people who didn’t have the same goals or mindset. They were constantly getting into trouble, and eventually, I got caught up in it too. I ended up in juvenile hall during one of the hardest times of the year, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. I didn’t get out until the following summer. I missed everything.

That experience hit me deep. I don’t blame anyone for what happened. Those were my choices, and I own them. But I also know that the people around me made it easier to take the wrong path. That experience taught me that who you spend time with either pulls you up or drags you down.


Since then, I’ve made it a priority to surround myself with people who inspire me, who push me to grow, and who are on a mission of their own. I’ve learned to protect my energy and to be intentional about who I let into my world.

When I was younger, I didn’t always listen. Sometimes I’d ignore that voice, and more often than not, I’d be left disappointed, wishing I had followed through. For me, the best way to measure progress is simple! Like I said earlier, Journalling.

There’s something powerful about seeing my thoughts and actions written down. When I log my experiences each day, I’m not just writing for the sake of it—I’m creating a record of my growth. I can look back and see the decisions I made, the mindset I was in, the wins, the losses, and the lessons.


Each Saturday, I carve out time to reflect on the week. I go back and ask myself:

  • Did I do what I said I would?

  • Did I move forward—or did I take a step back?

  • What did I learn that I can carry into next week?


This weekly check-in has become a non-negotiable for me. It keeps me honest with myself. It allows me to adjust my actions, my language, even my energy—whatever needs a reset to get me closer to what I’m chasing.


And even on a smaller scale, every morning when I journal, I also take a quick glance at the previous day. That five-minute reflection helps me realign before I start moving again. It’s like checking the map before continuing a hike—you make sure you’re not veering off trail.


It might sound like a lot, but the truth is, it only takes a few minutes out of your day. And those few minutes? They compound. Over time, they become the difference between drifting aimlessly and making real, measurable progress.
